Civil War - Review

We Record So Other People Ask.

4 / 5

The Guardians of the Galaxy team line up

Directed by Alex Garland.

In the near future, a group of war journalists attempt to survive while reporting the truth as the United States stands on the brink of civil war.

Alex Garland returns with a hard-hitting and visually stunning look at a nation divided, forcing audiences to experience a world not so different from our own.

America is presented through the eyes of detached photojournalists, shooting horrifying moments of unrest and presenting them with an unexpected beauty which is easily where the film is at its strongest.

Excellent performances, especially by Cailee Spaeny and a scene-stealing cameo from Jesse Plemons help to bring this tense film together. But even though it is technically impressive and a relentlessly immersive experience, the messy narrative does let it down, playing things surprisingly impartial which feels like it takes the sting out of its tail.
